Heating is responsible for nearly a quarter of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions and therefore decarbonising heat is an essential stage in the transition to net zero. While they currently only provide 3% of total UK heat, heat networks could provide a mechanism for decarbonising heat. Zoning could help remove the obstacles to the development of large-scale heat networks, paving the way to the involvement of private sector capital and to the eventual emergence of heat networks as an infrastructure asset in their own right. Can the business models used in countries with much more advanced heat networks be applied in GB?
